My squeeze and I trekked over foaming sand
Of Ninety Mile Beach not as long as claimed
Though beautiful and colorfully named
The Reinga ridge thinned down to ocean grand
A Maori mister toted tuatua stuck in sack
A plastic tiki hung on his thick neck
In bushy beard a salt and pepper fleck
In surfer shorts a shadowy builders crack
Two tuatua cost us seven roll your owns
They cooked in crackling curls of jetsam wood
In circle made of rounded rocks and stones
The sunset streaked our hair in hat and hood
Our dawdling feet indented zero marks
On soaking sand in flowing and ebbing arcs
