a study toward sonnet #1,229 by FisherKingKQJ
Grinding sea-glass, I engraved four letters
On driftwood dry as pulled wine bottle cork,
And flung it cross the estuary silt fork,
Signaling our love to eeltrap setters.
But said bobbled back as if from betters,
Swam neither eddy twirl nor cyclone torque;
Our love proved trivial, tiny as a quark
We weren't worth a second look in fetters.
Our initials then in a heart were scoured,
She sighed that we were true cipher selves,
Who were these people? had their passion soured?
Were they young still? The alter ego yet delves.
Who loves her knows her by her middle name,
My own first shortened familiar, and tame.
